Animals Portraits Landscapes Abstracts Commissions
My name is Michael Whitlark. I am an artist living in Charlotte, North Carolina. Creating art has always been my passion in life. I spent hours growing up hunched over sketchbooks drawing my favorite cartoon characters over and over, making sure that I got it just right. Eventually, I was sketching faces from magazines left out on the coffee table. However, it wasn't until I was almost 20 before I got around to buying my first paint set. My sister asked me to try to do some art pieces to sell at a fundraising auction - so I went to A.C. Moore and bought my first set of oil paints and a few thin canvases. This is where my real love for art blossomed.
I found out quickly that the years of developing an understanding of lights and darks, shades, shape and composition paid off with graphite, pen and ink paid off. Color became a whole new world for me to discover - and I was in mesmerized. I started with portraits, working from photographs. I remember holding my paint laden paintbrush up to the photo trying to get the colors just right, to match them exactly. But, it wasn't long until I left all that behind. I learned to look at color in a whole new way; finding greens and yellows, purple (my personal favorite color) blue and red everywhere. And once I learned to see them, they made their way into my art. I love working with elephants, especially, because they offer a blank palette. Their grey tone gives me space for my imagination to run wild, and the deeply grooved texture of their skin gives such opportunity for lights and darks to collide.
I hope that you enjoy my work as much as I love making it. Feel free to browse my site and explore my work. I sell both originals and prints of my work, and am always happy to do a commission. Prints can be on either paper or stretched on canvas and are available for sale under the "PRINTS" tab. If you are interested in an original, email me directly with the title of the piece.
